5G NR Functionality & SA Architecture

Course Objectives

The course is about the 5G RAN functionalities and procedures primarily in the context of Standalone (SA) architecture.

The course provides a comprehensive introduction to 5G SA and describes the Idle Mode Behavior, along with Scheduling and Mobility behaviors, with their respective procedures.

  • Introduction to 5G SA Architecture: Overview of the 5G core network components, including Control Plane (CP) and User Plane (UP) separation, and how they differ from Non-Standalone (NSA) configurations.
  • Key Features of 5G SA: Understanding network slicing, ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC), and enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) capabilities (in brief)
  • The differences of SA versus NSA in the NR cell Operation
  • Idle Mode Behavior Characteristics
  • System Information in SA & NSA NR
  • Cell Selection and Re-selection procedures
  • Paging functionality and procedures
  • The essential Scheduling principles
  • Xn, intra- and inter gNodeB Handovers
  • Description of Mobility events and measurement reports
  • NR in Inter-frequency and IRAT mobility

 Entry Requirements

A foundational understanding of mobile communication systems, including 4G (LTE) and 5G technology.

Experience in radio network design and optimization

Knowledge of RF concepts and principles
