OpenStack & Kubernetes (K8s) Introduction, Configuration and Administration

Course Objectives

This course has been designed for professionals seeking to develop a solid understanding of OpenStack, K8s and their core services, monitoring, logging and troubleshooting principles.

It consists of two parts: the OpenStack module and the K8s one.

The Openstack part aims at providing with a complete experience with administering and operating the most common OpenStack components to implement Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) in a cloud, from image management to instance creation to network plugins and more. The hands-on part covers managing users, projects, flavors, roles, images, networking, and block storage.

In Kubernetes module attendees learn how to install and configure a production-grade Kubernetes cluster, from network configuration to upgrades to making deployments available via services. In the hands-on part they use the K8s key principles, such as pods, deployments, replicasets, and services, and will give you enough information so that you can start using Kubernetes on their own.

  • Keystone (Identity service): Authenticating with Keystone, managing tokens, RBAC policies, & the purpose of the Service Catalog. Manage projects, users, roles, and quotas.

  • Neutron (Network service): Understand what networks OpenStack uses, such as, the management network. Neutron architecture, Neutron security groups, Virtual routers, virtual switches and more.
  • Nova (Compute service): Using Nova to deploy virtual machine (VM) instances & control where the instances are deployed. Deploying instances with SSH keys for better security. Understanding the supported hypervisors. Lastly, implementing resource quotas.
  • Heat (Orchestration service): Discusses Heat templates, their syntax, with practical examples of Heat templates.
  • Cinder: Manage ephemeral and persistent block storage
  • Swift: Manage object storage
  • Hands on include:
    • Manage flavors, storage, project, users, networks, images
    • Launch and verify an instance.
    • Customizing an instance on deployment time
    • Instances deployment through the orchestration function (HEAT)

Entry Requirements

Linux administration, IT services knowledge and/or working experience.
